A small boy, born to a poor family without money or connections, relies on education to get ahead in life. He applies to various colleges, and after a lot of struggle, graduates after two failed attempts. What next? He applies for all possible job openings he can, but, gets rejected each time. What would a ‘normal’ person do then? Accept this as his fate, or, maybe, have the courage to turn his fate around?
This is what Jack Ma did..
When KFC came to China, 24 people applied for a job, 23 were selected, the 24th was him. He faced similar fate in over 30 jobs that he applied to. Rejections were synonymous with his name – but treating rejections as opportunities, too, became synonymous to his name.
He accidentally stumbled upon the internet while working for a Chinese company – and that is when the idea of “Alibaba” conceptualized in his mind! Against all odds, he decided to start an internet company for China. Though his first two ventures failed, four years later he gathered 17 of his friends in his apartment and convinced them to invest in him and his vision for an online marketplace he called “Alibaba.” The site allowed exporters to post product listings that customers could buy directly. The brand didn’t turn profitable for the first three years, but he never gave up. No bank would work with him and his payments could not pass through. But giving up wasn’t his style – and so, he decided to make his own bank – AliPay.
People’s reaction to this was: “this is the stupidest idea you’ve ever had”
His belief: “I didn’t care if it was stupid as long as people could use it.”
Today: his e-commerce company, Alibaba attracts 100 million shoppers a day and his real time net-worth is about a whopping USD 21.9 billion, and more than 800 million people use AliPay. He has impacted the entire economy and internet industry of China almost single-handedly.
That is the power of “never giving up”!
