“The e-commerce industry is a force that no investor can afford to ignore!”

October-November is generally that time of the year when there is a boom in the retail sector. People all over the country get their wish-lists ready. They head to the nearest shops to buy clothes, sweets, electronics and what not. However, this year, as I visited the nearest mobile phone store, I realized that it looked quite empty, compared to the yester-years.

On enquiry, the shopkeeper told me that there has been a significant reduction in the number of their customers with the advent of online shopping. He even expressed his desire to shut down the business due to the dearth of customers. At that point of time, I was happy to point out that he, too, could sell his products online. Major online retailing companies like Amazon, Flipkart, Snapdeal and eBay have their own procedures which allow the sellers to enlist their products on the website for sale.

Listing on Flipkart

You have to register yourself at https://seller.flipkart.com/ in order to sell products on Flipkart. Then, you can list your products under specific product categories.

You are required to have the following documents:

  • PAN Card (Personal PAN for business type “Proprietorship” and Personal + Business PAN for business type as “Company”)
  • VAT/TIN Number (not mandatory for books)
  • Bank account and supporting KYC documents ( address proof, and cancelled cheque)

It is absolutely free to list products on Flipkart.com. Flipkart does not charge anything for listing your catalogue online. You only pay a small commission for what you sell. The seller has the liberty to decide the price of the products listed. Flipkart also offers a pick-up and delivery service across India.

However, you are required to have a minimum of 10 unique products to start selling on Flipkart. Also, it is currently a marketplace only for products, and no services can be listed on it.

Listing on Amazon (India)

Amazon.in uses a programme called ‘Sell on Amazon’ to enable sellers to list and sell their products on the platform. In order to register as a seller on Amazon.in you need to provide the following information:

  • Your company details
  • Your contact details – email and phone number
  • Basic information about your business
  • VAT/CST Details are mandatory and need to be provided after registration.

The seller can also use “Amazon Sponsored Products” to advertise the products. Amazon seller accounts are automatically enabled with “Amazon Easy Ship”, which provides pickup and delivery services for the products sold. Sellers can also opt for “Fulfillment By Amazon” where their inventory can be stored at Amazon’s fulfillment centers for shipping products directly to customers. Amazon also has a “sell in the US” service to sell products in USA.

Currently it is mandatory to have ISBN/ bar codes to list on Amazon. If you are a manufacturer or do not have these, you can request for an exception by contacting seller support through your Seller Central Account. Some product categories might require additional information to list products.
